Decoding the Secret Language of Crochet

When you look at a crochet pattern for the first time, it can look like an alien language or a complicated math equation. Do not panic! Patterns are simply written in a shorthand code to save space and make them easier to follow once you know the abbreviations.

Common Abbreviations

Most patterns use standard abbreviations. Here are the most common ones you will encounter:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • inc: increase (work 2 stitches into the same space)
  • dec: decrease (work 2 stitches together)

Understanding Asterisks (*) and Parentheses ()

Patterns use symbols to tell you when to repeat a series of stitches.

Asterisks (*): If you see a pattern line that says *sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * to end of row, you will go back to the asterisk and repeat that specific sequence of stitches until you run out of stitches in the row.

Parentheses or Brackets [ ]: These indicate a sequence of stitches to be worked into one single space, or to be repeated a specific number of times. For example: (sc, dc, tr) in next st means you put all three of those stitches into the exact same hole.

Gauge and Materials

Always read the top section of the pattern before you start! This section tells you what yarn weight and hook size the designer used. It also provides the “Gauge,” which is a measurement you should match to ensure your finished item is the correct size.
