The 5 Basic Crochet Stitches

Almost every crochet pattern, no matter how complex, is built upon a few foundational stitches. Once you master these five stitches, you can crochet almost anything!

1. Chain Stitch (ch)

The chain stitch is the foundation of crochet. It is used to start projects and to create spaces between other stitches. To make a chain, simply yarn over your hook and pull the yarn through the loop currently on your hook.

2. Single Crochet (sc)

The single crochet is a short, dense stitch perfect for amigurumi (stuffed toys) and warm winter garments. Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Yarn over again and pull through both loops.

3. Half Double Crochet (hdc)

The half double crochet is slightly taller than a single crochet and has a beautiful, textured look. Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

4. Double Crochet (dc)

The double crochet is twice the height of a single crochet and works up very quickly. It is ideal for blankets and sweaters. Yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops.

5. Treble Crochet (tr)

Also known as a triple crochet, this is a very tall stitch that creates a loose, lacy fabric. You start by yarning over your hook twice before inserting it into the stitch.
