Choosing the Perfect Yarn for Your Project
Walking down the yarn aisle can be overwhelming! Yarns come in countless colors, fibers, and thicknesses (weights). Let’s break down what you need to know.
Yarn Fibers
The material the yarn is made of drastically affects how your finished project will look, feel, and wash.
- Acrylic: Synthetic, affordable, highly durable, and usually machine washable. Excellent for blankets, amigurumi, and beginners.
- Cotton: Natural, breathable, and strong. It doesn’t stretch much. Perfect for dishcloths, summer garments, and market bags.
- Wool: Natural, incredibly warm, and elastic. Great for winter wear. Note: Some wool must be hand-washed unless it says “Superwash.”
- Blends: Many yarns blend acrylic with wool or cotton to get the best of both worlds (e.g., the warmth of wool with the washability of acrylic).
Yarn Weights (Thickness)
Yarn weight refers to the thickness of the yarn strand, categorized by a standard number system (0 to 7).
- 1 – Super Fine (Sock/Fingering): Used for delicate shawls and socks.
- 3 – Light (DK): Great for lightweight garments and baby items.
- 4 – Medium (Worsted/Aran): The most common weight. Perfect for beginners, blankets, hats, and amigurumi.
- 5 – Bulky: Works up quickly! Great for chunky scarves and thick sweaters.
- 6 – Super Bulky: Very thick, often used for fast, cozy blankets and baskets.
Tip: Always check the yarn label. It will tell you the fiber content, weight category, washing instructions, and the recommended crochet hook size!
