Getting Started with Crochet

Everything you need to know to start your crochet journey.

Crochet guide

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Crochet!

Starting a new hobby can be intimidating, but crochet is one of the most accessible and relaxing crafts you can learn. All you need to begin is a crochet hook, some yarn, and a little bit of patience.

What You Need to Start

  • A Crochet Hook: For beginners, a size H-8 (5.0 mm) aluminum hook is highly recommended. It is comfortable to hold and works well with medium-weight yarns.
  • Yarn: Choose a smooth, medium-weight (worsted weight, #4) acrylic or cotton yarn in a light color. Light colors make it much easier to see your stitches as you are learning.
  • Scissors: Any pair will do, but small craft scissors are handy.
  • Yarn Needle: Also known as a tapestry needle, used for weaving in your loose ends when you finish a project.

Your First Steps

The very first thing you need to learn is how to hold your hook and yarn. There is no absolute “right” wayโ€”some people use a “pencil grip” while others prefer a “knife grip.” Try both and see what feels most natural to your hands.

Next, you will learn how to make a slip knot to attach the yarn to your hook, followed by chaining (creating a foundation row). Take your time, practice your chains until they look even, and remember that every expert was once a beginner!

๐Ÿ’ก Beginner tip: always check the yarn, hook size and whether a pattern uses US or UK crochet terms before you start.
